Meeting the code for insulation

The New Zealand Building Code has increased the thermal requirements for new homes substantially in the largest upgrade of the Code since 2008.

The Government has massively raised the thermal requirements of new homes in the 2021 NZ Building Code.

Responding to the health and power-saving benefits of insulation, the New Zealand Building Code has been updated and minimum R-Values have been increased substantially - in some cases doubling.
The change is driven by the government’s desire for warmer, drier, healthier homes and are expected to reduce the energy to heat new homes by an impressive 40%.

R-values for Existing homes?

For homeowners there are no Building Code requirements for how much insulation you have to have in your home unless you are its landlord or if you are doing consented renovations.

We have always recommended insulating to the Building Code level - after all, matching the standard of a new home is always desirable in the areas where retrofitting is possible: ceiling & underfloor. We have a range of insulation products to meet the standard for you.

Minimum recommendation for existing homes

As it is a non-mandatory code for existing homes, not everyone will want to insulate fully to the new 2021 minimum.

Certainly you should choose a minimum of R2.9 and up to R6.6 for ceilings and R1.9 or higher for underfloor.
