Top-Up or Full Replacement?
Not every ceiling needs ripping out. We'll tell you which of these suits your home:
- Top-up: if your existing insulation is dry and in sound condition, we can lay new insulation over it to lift performance. It usually costs less than starting again.
- Removal and replacement: if the old material is damp, damaged by vermin or full of dust, we take it out and install fresh insulation in its place.

Ceiling Insulation Materials We Install
The best ceiling insulation is the one that suits your roof, your climate and your budget. We only install materials approved under the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme, so a funded job and a self-funded job use the same products.
- Polyester insulation (Mammoth): made from recycled plastic bottles, and it doesn't itch or irritate skin.
- Glasswool insulation (Pink Batts and Bradford Gold): the traditional choice, and it fills the roof space to hold heat in.

R-Values and Compliance
An R-value tells you how well insulation resists heat flow, and a higher number means better performance. The R-value your home needs depends on where you live, because New Zealand's requirements differ between climate zones.

Ceiling Insulation Cost and Funding
We quote ceiling insulation costs after a free visit, because the price depends on:
- The size of your roof space
- How easy it is to reach
- What insulation is already there and what shape it's in
- The R-value your region needs
Funding can cover most or all of it. Eligible homeowners can get 50 to 90% off through Warmer Kiwi Homes, and some regions reach 100%, including for SuperGold and Community Services Card holders. Ceiling Insulation Installation: What Happens on the Day
Our installers handle ceiling insulation installation in a set order:
- Check the roof space – We look at access, wiring and what's already up there.
- Clear around fittings – We leave safe gaps around downlights, chimneys and roof vents.
- Remove old material if needed – Damp or damaged insulation comes out and we dispose of it.
- Fit the new insulation – We lay it snugly without gaps or squashing, so it performs as rated.
- Tidy and explain – We clean up and walk you through what we did.
Pairing the job with underfloor insulation or a ground moisture barrier gives you a home that keeps its warmth from the roof down. If you're adding a heat pump, insulating first means it uses less energy.
Frequently Asked Questions: Ceiling Insulation
Often, yes. If the old batts are dry, intact and not compressed, a top-up is usually the cheaper option. We check at your assessment.
It does. Insulation slows the heat radiating from a hot roof space into your rooms, so bedrooms stay more comfortable on warm days.
You can, but roof spaces hide wiring, downlights and tight corners, and squashed batts perform worse. Our installers deal with these on every job.
